I have received your despatch No. 85 of the 21st of August forwarding the usual Returns for the 3rd Quarter 1872.

I observe that Mr. Tonnochy is drawing the full salary of the office of Assistant Superintendent of the Fire Brigade in the absence of Mr. Russell on leave; I am not aware why the latter should not be allowed half the salary of that office, but I cannot sanction any excess payment on this head.
